Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’ Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake. Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father. Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.”
—John 14:8–14
The Lord knows where you are spiritually—and where he wants to take you. If you’re new in your faith, don’t expect to understand everything right away. Spiritual understanding grows over time, through practice and intimacy with Jesus.
In this passage, Jesus responds patiently to Philip, who had been with him a long time but still didn’t fully grasp who Jesus was. Jesus doesn’t rebuke him harshly—he gently clarifies and invites Philip into deeper understanding.
Whether you’ve walked with Jesus for decades or are just beginning your journey, God will meet you where you are. If you’re struggling to hear him, ask. He will reveal why—and help you draw closer.
The more you become aware of his presence and practice listening, the more your life will change in ways you cannot yet imagine.
Reflection Questions
If, like Philip, you have been walking with the Lord for a few years and are still unable to understand what he is doing in your life, ask the Lord what changes you need to make.
Lord, what are you teaching me in today’s reading?
Lord, what else have you said to me through thoughts, circumstances, conversations, emotions, or the work of the enemy?
Lord, what do you want me to do: At home? At work? In ministry?
