Jesus came to them and said, All power has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have taught you. I will be with you always, even to the end of the age.Matthew 28:18–20

The verses above outline what it means to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ. It starts with repentance—a turning of one’s life toward God rather than away from him—marked outwardly through baptism. The next step of obedience continues with discipleship, where new disciples join a community with those who have journeyed in the faith for a while longer. In this life-on-life community, the disciple learns to obey everything I have taught you,” which keeps our lives moving in God’s direction and helps us grow to be more like Christ.
