Opening Reflection: My Dreams
“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
—Psalm 37:4
Let these questions help you reflect on what God is planting in your heart for the future—both personally and in ministry. This exercise is not about building your own kingdom, but about discovering the unique role God has for you in his.
Which of your earlier dreams remain unfulfilled?
Are these dreams still valid (as in, still feasible, still make sense for what God is doing in your life and heart, and still needed in the world)?
Do they reflect the person God is shaping you to become?
Write honestly. Even unfulfilled dreams can help reveal what God has wired you to care about.
When in your life have you felt most fulfilled?
What were you doing?
What circumstances contributed to that fulfillment?
These moments may contain clues to your calling.
What burden do you carry for your community?
As you consider:
Health (physical, emotional, spiritual)
Education (spiritual or academic)
Welfare (employment, income, living conditions)
What breaks your heart or bothers you most?
What would you like to see in your future?
Personally
Spiritually
In your community or ministry?
Don’t filter your answers too much. Let your hope speak first; refinement can come later.
Dream Scenarios Questions
Let these help uncover your deeper motivation:
If you had ten more years of effective ministry, and money were no obstacle, what would you do?
Now, if you had only three more years of effective ministry in your current circumstances—while enjoying excellent health—what would you do differently?
What might God be inviting you to plan or pursue based on the answers above?
What are the next steps?
Are any of these ideas significant enough to require careful planning?
If so, see the Nehemiah Planning Tool in the Appendix to begin shaping your vision into action.
A Final Encouragement
Write your dreams down.
God often clarifies, refines, or even redirects your dreams as you walk with him. Writing your dreams and goals down helps you listen, process, and respond more clearly.
If you find yourself unsure of what to write, don’t be discouraged. This book exists to help you learn how to hear God’s voice and better understand your unique place in the world as he reveals it—day by day.
