Jesus sent his twelve disciples out and commanded them, saying, “Do not go among the non-Jewish people and do not enter any city of the Samaritans. Rather, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” —Matt. 10:5–6
The man from whom the demons had gone out begged him that he might go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your house, and declare what great things God has done for you.” He went his way, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him. —Luke 8:38–39
We are called to go wherever the Lord directs us. Unless he clearly leads you elsewhere, assume he wants you to begin making disciples right where you are. Regularly listening to his voice is essential to understanding his specific instructions.
It’s also important to stay connected with those you disciple, especially as they begin discipling others. Your primary role is to help them learn how to abide in Christ. Once they do, your guidance shifts to simply encouraging them to listen to Jesus and follow his leading. Our mission is to lead others to Jesus and teach them to obey everything he has commanded. As that process unfolds, Jesus himself takes over their growth and discipleship. The Listening to Jesus journey is a powerful starting point for living out discipleship and embracing the life Jesus intends for us.
