“You cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.”
0—Luke 14:33
Jesus asks for complete surrender—not because he wants to take from us, but because he wants to give us something better: a new life aligned with his purposes. What we hand over, he returns in grace-filled, purposeful ways. Still, surrender is rarely easy. It often feels like dying to self because it is.
Reflection Questions
In today’s Scripture, why do you think Jesus says we must surrender everything to be his disciple?
Have you come to the point of complete surrender to God? If not, what prevents you? If so, have you taken anything back that you had previously surrendered (possessions, control, etc.)?
Lord, what are you teaching me in today’s reading?
Lord, what else have you said to me through thoughts, circumstances, conversations, emotions, or the work of the enemy?
Lord, what do you want me to do: At home? At work? In ministry?
