Opening Reflection: Prior Quests (Your Life Story - So Far)

You may not have always been aware of God, but he has always been aware of you. Each person you’ve met, place you’ve lived, and experience you’ve had is part of a story he’s been writing all along. Through it all, he has been faithfully present—guiding, shaping, preparing.

Now it’s time to look back and reflect on that story—and begin shaping it with intention. Create a simple outline of your life so far. Break it into major sections, then into chapters. For each chapter, note the key people, places, and lessons that shaped you. You might find it helpful to sketch a timeline first—think about where you’ve lived, schools you’ve attended, jobs you’ve held, or faith communities and experiences that impacted you.

Mapping your life story isn’t just a memory exercise. It’s a chance to trace God’s fingerprints through your past—and to recognize how he’s been forming you for what lies ahead. Spend a little time on it each day until it’s complete. You may be surprised by what God brings to mind.

You don’t need to write it all at once—just begin. Sketch a timeline. Highlight the turning points. Identify what stands out and why. As you reflect, ask God to show you what he’s been doing all along.

Why do this? Self-reflection helps you gain perspective. It also helps you better understand and contextualize your journey. Finally, it allows you to pass on a legacy to future generations, to witness to how God’s faithfulness has covered every chapter—even the ones you didn’t realize he was in.

When you finish, mark it with a simple note: “To be continued.” Since your story has not yet concluded, make a note to add to it on each birthday or at the beginning of each new year.
