Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus went out to a solitary place and prayed there. — Mark 1:35
Make it a priority to spend time in solitude with God each day so you can hear what he is saying to you. As we spend time with Jesus and welcome the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts, God speaks to us—both through Scripture and the events in our lives.
Henri Nouwen writes in Making All Things New:
“Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life. Solitude begins with a time and place for God, and God alone. If we really believe that God not only exists but also is actively present in our lives—healing, teaching, and guiding—we should set aside time and space to give God our undivided attention. Jesus says, ‘Go to your private room and, when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in that secret place’ (Matt. 6:6).”
Treat your time alone with God as the most important appointment of your day. Block it off. Protect it. Let this be the place where you allow Jesus to nourish and guide your soul.
Use part of this time to work through the daily meditations in this book. The time you need will vary—some days may take fifteen minutes, while others may take longer. Be present, listen well, and respond as God speaks.
