David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with another shepherd, and took the gifts as Jesse had asked. He arrived at the Israelite camp just as the army was leaving for the battlefield with shouts and battle cries. Soon, the armies of the Israelites and Philistines were facing each other. David left his gifts with the keeper of supplies and hurried out to greet his brothers. As he talked with them, Goliath, the champion of the Philistines from Gath, came out from the Philistine ranks and taunted the army of Israel. As soon as the Israelites saw him, they ran away in fright. —1 Sam. 17:20–24

Because David left earlier than usual, he arrived at the camp as the troops formed their lines—possibly the first time he witnessed the war cry. Imagine his excitement as Israel’s army marched out—only to watch them retreat in fear when Goliath appeared.

David, stirred by the moment, was likely shocked. He couldn’t believe no one had stepped up to challenge the Philistine. From his perspective, with God on their side, any soldier should have had the confidence to fight. But David’s courage came from a cultivated trust in God—something the others lacked.
