“If you love me, obey my commandments. I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Helper, that he may be with you forever: the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him and doesn’t know him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.” —John 14:15–17
“The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” —John 10:3–5
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will honor me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.” —John 16:13–14
Jesus said, “If you love me, obey my commandments. I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Helper” (John 14:15–16)—the Holy Spirit. As you learn to recognize his voice, you will follow him with confidence and avoid being led astray. He reveals truth, including what lies ahead, so you can discern the direction he is leading you.
Scripture calls us to live by the Spirit, yet many limit God by believing he speaks only through their reading and interpretation of the Bible. This incomplete understanding causes them to miss the active ministry of the Holy Spirit—the same God who inspired Scripture 1, stands at the door and knocks 2, desires intimate fellowship with his children 3, and guides us into all truth 4 if we are willing to listen.
