Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Accept my teachings and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest for your souls. The burden I ask you to accept is easy, and the load I give you is light.” —Matt. 11:28–30

This passage isn’t just a call to hand your stress to God—it’s an invitation to learn a whole new way of living. Many Christians read these words for comfort, but never go deeper into the life of discipleship Jesus describes. Until we truly learn his ways, abiding and surrendering to him, we’ll keep repeating the same cycle, returning to this passage burdened and burnt out.

Everyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the floods came up, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall because it was built on the rock.”Matt. 7:24-25

Jesus calls us to hear his words and put them into action. That’s the focus of the Listening to Jesus training—learning to live out his teachings as the Holy Spirit prompts and empowers us.

Reflection Questions

Is obeying the teaching of Jesus a daily focus for both me and my church? If so, what is the process? If not, what would it look like to start?

Lord, what are you teaching me in today’s reading?

Lord, what else have you said to me through thoughts, circumstances, conversations, emotions, or the work of the enemy?

Lord, what do you want me to do: At home? At work? In ministry?
