Jesus said to those who had believed him, “If you obey my commands, you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” —John 8:31–32
At the center of discipleship is a continual, growing relationship with Jesus. In this relationship, we learn to obey all that he commanded—as recorded in the four Gospels—and to respond to the personal guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives today.
Listening to Jesus Foundations and the Listening to Jesus Today book series are grounded in Jesus’ words and designed to help us learn how to hear and obey him. Asking the three daily questions throughout our lives in tandem with the Scripture reading and commentary helps align us with God’s voice and his mission in each of our lives.
These resources are most effective when paired with personal Bible study, prayer, and a strong, regular connection to a community of believers—called Spotfires. Discipleship is not a solo journey. God invites us to boldly walk with others who are also learning to listen and obey.
We call a small gathering of disciples a Spotfire to denote a flame. The term was originally used to refer to a secondary fire that ignites outside the main perimeter of a larger one. A Spotfire is started by the flame of the Holy Spirit in one person who is led to share it with others. The Spotfire is perpetually fueled by listening to and obeying Jesus as he continues to provide all that is needed to keep the Spotfire lit.
Reflection Questions
What changes do I need to make to be his true disciple? What practices and disciplines have I neglected?
Lord, what are you teaching me in today’s reading?
Lord, what else have you said to me through thoughts, circumstances, conversations, emotions, or the work of the enemy?
Lord, what do you want me to do: At home? At work? In ministry?
