Jesus said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain faithful to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” —John 8:31–32
“I tell you that anyone who does not enter by the door into the sheep fold, but climbs up some other way, is a thief and a robber. But one who enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. Whenever he brings out his sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger but will flee from him; for they do not know his voice.” —John 10:1–5
Don’t be discouraged if you struggle to recognize God’s voice. He has been speaking to you your entire life, even if you’ve only just begun to realize it.
The first step to discerning God’s voice is becoming familiar with it—starting with Jesus’ teachings and extending to all of Scripture. The enemy is capable of quoting Scripture (see Matthew 4:6), so discernment requires knowing not only God’s Word but also his heart behind those words.
Like learning a new language, immersion is key. The more time you spend in God’s Word and in conversation with him, the more fluent you’ll become in hearing his voice. Over time, you’ll begin to understand his nature and how he speaks—directly, through Scripture, through people, and through your circumstances.
If you’re unclear, seek help from someone in your Listening to Jesus Spotfire or a trusted pastor or elder. God speaks through his people, too. Keep listening.
