Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived (who Jesus had raised from the dead). They made supper for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those eating with him. Mary took a pound of very expensive perfume and anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
Then Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples who would later betray him, said, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for a lot of money and given to the poor?” —John 12:1–5
There is a time to work and a time to rest. Abiding in Christ helps us know when each is needed. In today’s reading, Jesus is at the home of friends, enjoying a meal. Mary pours expensive perfume on his feet in an act of worship. Judas’ protest sounds practical, even righteous—but Jesus honors the gift. When we spend our time or resources, we must always consider their use in light of serving God. But that service sometimes includes ministering to our own souls and resting in his presence.
