Father, I thank you for listening to me. I know that you always listen to me, but because of the crowd I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

John 11:41–42

We are encouraged to participate daily in the discipline of listening to Jesus speak to us, thus becoming more aware of his presence. We must learn how he speaks and what he says. Reading his words in the Gospels helps us get used to hearing his voice and understanding his heart. Another way to discern his voice is by looking for confirmation in recurring patterns, reading additional Scripture, or prayerfully paying attention amid life’s unfolding events.

In all this, make sure what you hear is consistent with Scripture’s revelation of God. It’s also wise to discuss what you hear with your Spotfire or mature believers. Since God is always with us, we can speak to him anytime, just as he speaks to us. After all, what kind of relationship do we have if he does not speak and invite us to speak with him? Jesus loves to provide companionship as we live in his presence.
