When he got into a boat, his disciples followed him. A violent storm came up on the lake and waves were breaking into the boat, but Jesus was asleep. They woke him up, saying, “Save us, Lord! We are dying!”
He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the waves, and there was a great calm. The men marveled, saying, “What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the waves obey him?” —Matt. 8:23–27
Sometimes God speaks to us through circumstances that are beyond our control—our “storms.” These storms may not be weather-related. They could be financial, emotional, relational, or spiritual.
Whatever form they take, storms often trigger fear. But even when Jesus seems “asleep,” he is still with you. He hasn’t left the boat. He is present—waiting for you to turn to him with trust.
Not all hardships are caused by God, but nothing happens without his knowledge. In these moments, he speaks—sometimes through thoughts, other times, through the words of others, in books we’re reading, or even in “coincidences.” The key is to remain attentive. Ask him questions and be ready to hear the answers in ways you might not expect.
