Let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matt. 5:16

Be careful that you do not do your good deeds publicly, to be seen by others; otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”Matt. 6:1

Jesus rarely gives direct commands outside of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). Instead, he teaches principles to apply by the Spirit’s guidance. These two passages from the Sermon on the Mount may seem contradictory. Should we do good deeds publicly or not?

The key lies in motivation: Are we doing our good works out of obedience to God or so that others will see what we are doing and praise us? Our obedience must flow from our love for Jesus, whether it is seen or unseen by others.
